In Whisper to a Scream, he tells Ellie that he will be fine in Kabul, and reassures her that her mother's drinking is under control. He comforts her, and kisses his wife goodbye. He tells Ellie to always keep her smile. As he boards the bus, he waves goodbye to his family, who smile and wave back at him. He later calls Ellie and reveals that he arrived safely in Kabul. When he asks about her mother's condition, Ellie chooses to lie to him and says that she is doing fine, not revealing that she had become an alcoholic. His departure was part of the reason that Ellie's depression formed, which led to her begin cutting.
