The friendship between Ellie Nash and Spinner Mason is known as Spellie (Spinner/Ellie). It developed in Season 2 of Degrassi: The Next Generation.
Friendship History[]
Overview[]
Ellie Nash and Gavin "Spinner" Mason didn't interact a whole lot at Degrassi, but they were friendly and had the same mutual friends at one point or another, including Jimmy Brooks, Marco Del Rossi, Craig Manning and Paige Michalchuk. They were both originally in the class of 2006 until Spinner was held back in season 5 and eventually graduated in 2007.
Season 2[]
In Weird Science, Spinner watches Jimmy try, and fail, to ask out Ellie because she says her new best friend is his ex, though she does think he's cute. Jimmy walks up to Spinner, comments about his failed attempt, and tells Spinner to go to class with him. Spinner says he can't because of Emma Nelson's science experiment giving him boners all week when girls walk by and he has one now, presumably because he was watching Jimmy and Ellie talk. Ellie and Spinner met offscreen, as displayed when Spinner accidentally bumps into her and she calls him by name to tell him to open his eyes and he responds by calling her by her name and apologizing. Spinner, having a particularly hard day, gets an erection from the contact. The brief interaction was their first onscreen one. As the school day passes, Spinner realizes that somehow his healthy diet is making a lot of girls attracted to him. Later, Jimmy watches on as Ellie gives Spinner her number yet it is unknown if they went on a date, though he says he'll be calling her. After Ellie leaves, Jimmy runs up to him, takes the paper, and crumples it up, questioning him about Ellie's number. As Jimmy pushes him against the lockers, Spinner responds that he's a lover, not a fighter. When pressed further, he cites Charles "Derwin" and evolutionist thought that "man must spread his seed to survive." Spinner believes that dating Ellie is his "human duty." After Jimmy corrects Spinner's Derwin/Darwin confusion, Spinner un-crumples Ellie's number and tells Jimmy that with Emma's healthy diet food, the number would have been his. In Mrs. Kwan's class during an improv lesson, Jimmy chooses Spinner and Paige to act out a scene he describes that sounds very suggestive. As Paige, a "very lonely" housewife, gets a package delivered from Spinner, she asks him to come in for a drink, caressing him. Spinner tries to deflect and turn away but Mrs. Kwan tells him he needs to face the class. She walks over and turns him around and is revealed that Spinner now has a boner in front of the whole class. Ellie, Ashley, Terri MacGregor, and Hazel Aden are shown laughing with the rest of their classmates.
In Careless Whisper, Spinner makes a sexist joke aimed at Marco and Ellie gets up from the couch. Spinner asks sarcastically if he offended Ellie but she ignores him and beckons for Marco to follow her upstairs. The next day, Jimmy and Spinner tell Marco they're jealous of his "extended bathroom break" with Ellie the night before. Ellie walks up and ask what they're jealous about and they answer. She says they should be, shares a look with Marco, and kisses him in front of them. Spinner and Jimmy smile and walk off.
In Hot for Teacher, while in class with friend Ashley Kerwin, Ellie gets a whiff of Spinner's body odor and tells him, "Rule number one of puberty, shower every day." She turns away after making a face. After class, Spinner asks Jimmy if he smells and Jimmy says he's been smelling bad all week. Spinner asks why he hasn't told him because it's better to hear from him than Ellie.
Season 3[]
In Father Figure (1), Ellie is shown to be amused that Paige calls Spinner "honeybee" now that they're dating.
In Pride (1), Ellie joins her pretend-boyfriend Marco on a trip to the beach with Spinner, Jimmy, Hazel, and Paige. During their trip, Ellie tells Marco she's done pretending to be his girlfriend. Spinner encourages Marco to make some moves on Ellie which backfires as she proceeds to announce that her and Marco have broken up. Spinner then encourages Marco to make some moves on other girls by inviting him on a double date at The Dot with Hazel. Ellie happens to go to The Dot that day, sees Marco with Hazel and becomes disappointed in him.
In Pride (2), Ellie and Marco are concerned that Spinner has outed Marco to all their friends but it turns out he had just told them all he was planning a party for Paige's 16th birthday.
Season 5[]
In Venus (1), Elie avoids Spinner with the rest of the seniors when he greets them as they walk into school. Ellie later greets Spinner as he is working at The Dot and orders a coffee to go. Spinner notices the party supplies in her possession and Ellie tells him it's Craig's birthday. He asks if she and Craig are best friends now and she responds in the negative adding, "I just feel responsible since my former best friends ruined the guy's life," referencing Ashley's intention to break up with Craig because she's met someone new and decided to stay in England. Ellie then tells Spinner she has no place to throw Craig's "cheer up" party and Spinner offers to reserve an area in The Dot for them. Later that day, they have the party at The Dot, though most of the group refuse to talk to Spinner except for Craig, who greets Spinner when getting a cake from the coffee bar. Spinner, clueless that Craig hasn't been broken up with yet, tells Craig he's sorry for what happened with Ashley. Craig is confused so Spinner says Ellie told him the news and Craig becomes furious with Ellie for not telling him. Ellie doesn't seem to be upset that Spinner said anything to Craig.
In Venus (2), Ellie officially replaces Spinner as the drummer for Downtown Sasquatch due to the fact that the band overall is still on bad terms with Spinner and kicked him out.
In Weddings, Parties, Anything, while Craig, Ellie, Marco, and Jimmy are at The Dot, Spinner is a server and on the phone with Darcy.
In Together Forever, at the Dot, Spinner gives Craig, Jimmy, Ellie, Marco, and Manny details about their rivals in the upcoming Northern Sound showcase since they're at The Dot and his dishwasher is the rival's lead guitarist.
In I Against I, Ellie mentions to Jimmy and Marco at the carnival as they pass out safer sex seminar flyers how she can't believe that Friendship Club brainwashed Spinner. Later, when Spinner tries to apologize to Marco about siding with Linus, Ellie says it isn't the time. Spinner tells her it's never going to be the time and continues to speak to Marco.
Season 6[]
In Here Comes Your Man (1), Ellie and Marco sit in The Dot while Spinner picks up dishes. Spinner starts a conversation about college, saying being in college must be nice. Ellie tells him to not get too excited and complains that she doesn't even know what Foucault and postmodernist Marxist theory is and he tells her to not ask him and walks off. Paige walks in and sits between Marco and Ellie. Ellie later watches Spinner, Marco, Jimmy, and Ashley perform at Paige's goodbye party.
In Working For The Weekend, Ellie encourages Spinner and Jimmy to start their t-shirt business and celebrates with them after their first day open.
In What It Feels Like to Be a Ghost (1), Spinner and Ellie are at Ellie and Marco's Welcome Home party for Craig.
In Rock This Town, Spinner and Ellie attend Manny and Emma's birthday party for Liberty with Marco.
In Sunglasses at Night, Paige joins Ellie and Spinner who are standing by the bar as Marco dances at a club, elated that he has just won big playing poker. They both tell him they can't hang out at the club any longer.
