The friendship between Jonah Haak and Maya Matlin began in season one of Degrassi: Next Class.

Season 1[]
In #BootyCall, Jonah auditions to play guitar for Maya's band, and Maya gives him the spot. Jonah is seen entering the room for band practice, and comments to Maya, "Are we gonna practice, or are you and her boyfriend going to get a room?" Jonah and Maya are with Grace at band practice.
In #YesMeansYes, Jonah shows Maya a new bridge he wrote for their song, interrupting her and Zig. Later, Jonah and Maya are sitting in class together talking about music, and Zig interrupts them this time. Jonah tells Maya to text him when she's done with her conversation with Zig.

In #NotOkay, Maya, Jonah, and Grace audition for The Trap Door, and they get the gig. Keith, the bartender at The Trap Door, tells them to dress nicer, and Jonah tells them they're going shopping. The night of their gig, Jonah and Grace are waiting for Maya, who barely makes it on time. Maya gets agitated before their performance when a man asks her if she needs help plugging in her own gear. Grace sticks up for Maya, and Jonah asks Maya if they can focus on the show. Their performance goes well until Maya stops it to ask a man to quiet down. Grace, Maya, and Jonah luckily get another chance to perform at The Trap Door.
In #ThisCouldBeUsButYouPlayin, Maya and Jonah are singing their song "Black or White" before they leave for New York. Zig is not happy that they will be sharing a hotel room together since Grace was no longer going. In New York, Jonah gives Maya a mock interview to help calm her nerves before they meet with the music producer. Zig consistently continues to message Maya, which gets in the way of Maya and Jonah's prep time before their interview. Jonah says he gets why Zig is so into Maya, but he is distracting Maya from focusing. He asks if Maya could ignore Zig until after their meeting, which Maya agrees and tells Zig she is going offline to focus. The next day, the music producer doesn't like their music, and Maya feels dejected. Jonah cheers her up, and they take a photo for Hastygram.
In #SorryNotSorry, they open the episode together, performing at the dance. While they are setting up for the dance, Jonah suggests they play Maya's song "Yes", which she wrote for Zig, and Grace angrily rejects the idea. Maya figures out that she knew that Zig cheated and didn't tell her, so she kicks Grace out of playing with them that night. As Grace leaves, Maya tells Jonah to say something, but he is entirely confused on what happened. They perform at the dance.
Season 2[]
In #BuyMePizza, Maya approaches Jonah and Grace, who are sitting on a bench outside. Maya suggests they play with Peter's band for the anniversary gala, and Jonah and Grace are on board with the idea. Baaz approaches Grace, and insults her wardrobe, causing Maya and Jonah to laugh. Grace scares him off, but Jonah and Maya comment on how her style is "terrifying", not dressing to look attractive to guys, and "always ready for a funeral".
In #RiseAndGrind Maya and Jonah are in the car together and Maya excitedly shows Jonah the royalties she got from her songs. She’s also wondering why she’s not getting as many and Jonah shows her the cover that Vijay did of her song, Later they both watch the video Vijay made calling Maya out.
Season 3[]
In #IWokeUpLikeThis, Grace and Jonah are showing Maya their recordings and Maya tells them that they're cool. Maya asks if the recordings are for a bus crash song and they say yes. Grace asks if Maya has any lyrics written and Maya says she'll get to it. Later, Maya is on the computer when Grace and Jonah walk up to Maya and Grace says that they were waiting for her for forty minutes. Maya tells them that she's just been really caught up with university applications and homework. Grace and Jonah tell Maya that it's okay because they're dealing with that stuff too. Grace tells Maya to take the day off and they'll make music the next day.
In #Unsubscribe, Grace is walking with Jonah when they find Maya on the steps with blood running down the side of her face. They freak out and then Maya starts laughing. Saad tells Grace that they're only doing a photoshoot. Grace gets mad that Maya bailed on her to pretend to be dead. Maya says that the photos are about showing the beauty of death. Grace says that death isn't beautiful, it's final. Saad tells Grace not to yell at Maya. Grace gets upset and starts coughing and Jonah drags her away. Maya asks if Grace is okay and Jonah tells Maya that everything is fine.
In #IRegretNothing, Maya walks up to Grace and Jonah and tells them that she's able to help with the play. Grace says that they need people that they could trust. Jonah agrees and asks if Maya told Mr. Simpson that their play was about suicide. Maya says that she did. Grace says that Mr. Simpson is now reviewing the play and asks why Maya would do that. Maya tells Grace that things have been hard for her lately. Grace says that finding out that she needed a lung transplant before she graduated was even worse than anything Maya was dealing with. Maya says that she had no idea and Grace says it's because she's a terrible friend. Maya asks what she can do to help and Grace tells her that she just doesn't want her in her life anymore and walks away.
In #ImSleep, Maya approaches Jonah and asks if he can give a gift to Grace for her, but Jonah says she can give it to her herself. He also tells Maya that even though Grace might seem mad right now she loves Maya deep down. Maya jokingly asks if he’s the Grace Whisperer and Jonah says “hardly” and then gives Maya a free ticket to the play,
Season 4[]
In #Fire, Jonah and Grace enter the classroom that Maya is in. Maya is stressed about writing music and Jonah puts a flashlight headband on her saying “Maybe this will help you find your way.” Maya says she can’t come camping because she has to write but Jonah and Grace both convince her to come. Later Maya is still struggling to write a song and she thinks she should have some weed brownies but Jonah tells her not to, taking them away from her though she doesn’t listen and has some after he walks away. Later when Maya is high and asks everybody if she’s “twirling”, she reveals she ate the brownies and Jonah tells her to go lay down. The next morning Jonah reminds her he said he warned her the brownies were a bad idea.
In #Obsessed, they ride in the same limo to prom together.
In #KThxBye, they are seen at prom together with Grace and watch Zoe and Rasha win prom queens. They discuss Zig being gone for awhile before Grace and Jonah go dance. Later, Jonah plays guitar while Maya sings at graduation, and they both attend the after party at Miles’s house.
