"I like girls. I guess I'm gay or lesbian, I haven't chosen nomenclature yet."
— Fiona coming out to Holly J.

Fiona Celestine Arabella Coyne is a graduate and valedictorian of the Degrassi Community School's Class of 2013. She was from New York City, USA and is currently living in Rome, Italy. Although she and her twin brother Declan Coyne were born in Japan, Fiona considers Manhattan home. She transferred to Degrassi Community School in Season 9 during the second semester as a junior with her brother.

Fiona once relied on money to do everything for her, but she has learned how to manage with less of it, after her mother, Lara, was put on house arrest on account of fraud in her foundation until the family's legal troubles were resolved. She was a talented artist and is also very interested in fashion, as shown through her unique sense of style. A loner who once feared her own independence, Fiona has been to rehab to take control of her alcoholism, has been put on medication due to her anxiety problems, and has realized that she is a lesbian.

She is best friends with Holly J. Sinclair, Imogen Moreno, and Eli Goldsworthy. She is also good friends with Anya MacPherson, Bianca DeSousaMike Dallas, and Drew Torres. Additional friends of hers include Chantay Black, Adam Torres, Dave Turner, and Marisol Lewis. She formerly had a conflict with Tinsley Wharton due to her promiscuous reputation but respects her now for helping her in her trial against her abusive ex-boyfriend Bobby Beckonridge. She also seems to be on good terms with former enemy Katie Matlin and has shown a dislike of Clare Edwards. She was portrayed by Annie Clark.

Fiona in season 9

In Just Can't Get Enough, Fiona first appears with Declan as they exit their limo. Chantay Black shows her and Declan all around Degrassi. Fiona especially, seems rather aloof and cold to her new peers. She and Declan meet Peter Stone and his girlfriend Mia Jones and invite them to their parents' posh diplomat party, after hearing that Mia is a model.

When Declan sets Peter up for humiliation she playfully shakes her head in disbelief because she knows what's up Declan's sleeve.

When Peter is feeling insecure she comforts him. She chastises her cousin Victoria for giving Peter meth. She receives much attention that she does not want, especially from Bruce and Mark Fitzgerald.

In Shoot to Thrill, at Fashion Club, Dave Turner is constantly flirting with her, to get him to stop, Fiona lies and tells him that she's dating Riley. When Riley hears the rumor, he asks her out.

On their date, Riley's friend that appeared in Season 8 comes back asking for information on Riley. Riley gets mad and he leaves with Fiona pretending he does not know who he is. Fiona initiates a relationship even though she has suspicions regarding his sexual orientation.

Fiona later confronts Riley the next day at school telling him that there's something wrong with him. She states that instead of being 'gay' he bashes gay people. Fiona breaks up with him because she doesn't want to be friends with or date someone who is afraid of who they are.

In Beat It (2), the next day Riley confronts her and tells her that he is being de-gayed. Fiona tells him that she doesn't understand why he can't accept being a gay person. She tells him that there is no way to cure "gayness."

When she is halfway down the hallway, Riley (experiencing negative effects from the steroids) yells, "Too bad you can't cure bitch!" She then tells Riley to never talk to her again.

Holly J. asks why he couldn't say it then. Fiona tells her that Declan had a true love and he told her that he loved her and she cheated on him, he doesn't want that to happen again. Holly J. anxiously grabs the bracelet and goes to find Declan.

In Degrassi Takes Manhattan, after finding out that she and her brother are going to move back to Manhattan, Fiona appears to be very excited and mentions it in her Facerange status.

Holly J. is in disbelief and tired of coming second to Fiona. She and Jane leave, while Fiona secretly smirks to herself.

Fiona tells Adam that if she was in New York, she would be preparing for the East Village Artists Ball, saying that it is the night of the year due to crazy invites, stunning couture and her favorite part, champagne fountains everywhere.

This then gives Adam the idea that if Fiona can't go to the party, then he'll bring the party to her as Eli and Clare show him an abandoned church that Adam feels would be perfect for the party.

In Halo (2), Fiona then is sitting in art class when Adam arrives handing her an invitation to his anti-crackdown party. At first, the odds seem against her, and during a break, Fiona regretted going against Bobby and has to use her coping techniques to avoid drinking, but Holly J. gives her some words of encouragement to keep going through with the trial.

FTM, but because she was afraid Adam would become too close and discover the real her.

During the movie, they begin kissing. While kissing, Fiona slides her hand beneath Adam's shirt, which makes him uncomfortable.

To make Adam feel better, Fiona says that she likes how he is the "best of both worlds," because he's "boyish and girlish." Adam becomes angry because he doesn't want to be reminded of his female body parts, and because he realizes Fiona is a lesbian and was only

using him. Adam then leaves, telling Fiona that she should accept that she wants a girl. On the day of the wedding, Fiona and Imogen walk Bianca down the aisle and witness Audra scolding Drew and Adam for going to Vegas behind her back.  She is later seen helping Drew perform I Can't Help Falling in Love With You for Bianca.  Then she is seen at Drew and Bianca's engagement party along with Adam, Becky, Imogen, Audra, and Omar.

In Bitter Sweet Symphony (1), she explains Spirit Week and hands out different colored scarves to the students. Dallas tries to get Fiona to put Alli on the same Spirit Week team as him, but she ultimately gives Alli a different color.

Fiona apologizes to Dallas saying she can't show favoritism because of his crush, which he denies at first, but then he admits that she is hot.

Dallas says that he doesn't have the best rep with Degrassi girls, which is why he doesn't just ask Alli out. Fiona agrees that Dallas has a bad reputation, but tells him maybe he can use Spirit Week to change it and win Alli over. She makes him promise to no shenanigans that week since she wants it to be perfect.

In Bitter Sweet Symphony (2), Fiona was seen discussing about Campbell's death, saying that they will never know why he committed suicide. Later on, Fiona hears students talking about a student on the roof. She quickly goes to the roof, to find Dallas.

She talks to Dallas as he is emotional about Cam's death, saying he caused it. She convinces him not to jump, and then to get grief counseling at school with Tara. When he walks by to go to grief counseling, Fiona is glad to see him go.

In Ray of Light (1), Fiona, along with Clare, tries to help Eli out of his slump by asking him to edit the video yearbook. She likes what he edits until Dallas points out Cam should be apart of the video. Fiona then asks Eli if he could put him back in the video and he says yes.

In Ray of Light (2), she is seen helping Eli by asking him question for his NYU interview and tells him he shouldn't finish the yearbook video on behalf of Clare. She is later seen mouthing to him thank you for adding Cam back on to the video.

Fiona is upset finding out that Drew is moving out.

In Karma Police (1), Fiona is microwaving dinner for Drew, when he breaks the news to her that he's moving back in with his family. He thinks it's best for him due to money and he misses them.

This upsets Fiona dearly because she'll miss Drew and can't pay for the bills and feed herself. Drew already paid the months rent, but for later months he suggests she find a job or a new roommate. Fiona decides she wouldn't be comfortable living with a stranger, so she looks for a job.

While Fiona is working on resumes she accidentally spills her drink when Dave comes to offer her a sample drink. She takes ones and tells him that she's looking for a job, he tells her that he could talk to his manager about getting her a job at Juwanna Juice.

Fiona gets the job and she starts to tweet about it, among other things like her 'former rich girl problems'.

Fiona tells Imogen how she's getting more and more popular and getting more followers on twitter, Imogen begins to worry for Fiona because she doesn't know all these people that are following and retweeting her.

It's shown that Fiona's gps is on her tweets, making it available for people to see where she's tweeting from.

Fiona comes home from work one day to find several things in her apartment broken such as frames and windows.

The robber jumps up from behind, shows Fiona his gun and tells her to count

to thirty as he leaves.

The police come, but not much is known because she didn't see the robber, didn't know which direction her came from, didn't recall precisely if the door was locked or not, and she posted she was working late on twitter.

As the officer is leaving, Imogen enters looking worried. Fiona is frantically looking around for her laptop, but she can't find it, the robber stole it, so Imogen lets her use her laptop.

Fiona starts to worry that her house was broken into because of her gps, but Imogen reassures her that it could have been anyone and continues to comfort her.

Paranoid and scared for her life, she attempts to buy a gun from a gang in a sketchy part of town. They lead her into an isolated alley and brutally attack her and steal her wallet, credit cards and money.

One of the thugs slams Fiona's face on the concrete, scraping her cheek and giving her a black eye.

The next day in school, Imogen notices the fresh bruises on Fiona's face, prompting her to divulge what happened that fateful night. She comforts Fiona, and together they walk down the hallway.

In The Time of My Life, Imogen and Eli are rushing to meet Fiona, who has asked them for some last minute additions to prom.

On the way, Imogen trips and her report card falls out of her bag. To Eli's surprise, she hasn't opened it yet.

Imogen has flunked all her classes and will have to repeat her senior year. They meet up with Fiona and Imogen is amazed by her work on prom.

Later at Fiona's house, Imogen is debating whether she should wear her hair up or down. Fiona tells her to wear it up so she can show off the necklace she made for her.

When Fiona brings up graduation, Imogen lays on her bed and cries. She reveals to Fiona that she has failed her classes.

Fiona is understanding, but just as they kiss, Fiona's mother enters the building, and is no longer on house arrest, meaning the Coynes are rich again.

This itself isn't the good news, as it turns out a famous fashion designer, Federico Cavalieri, is interested in Fiona's work. Imogen is thrilled, that is until she finds out Fiona will have to move to Italy. Imogen can’t imagine saying goodbye to Fiona.

At prom, Imogen, Fiona, Bianca, and Drew are sitting at the same table discussing Cavalieri's offer. Bianca and Drew seem supportive, and Fiona seems interested, surprising Imogen, who thinks it is a terrible idea. Imogen is distraught at the idea of losing Fiona.

Fiona tries to cheer Imogen up, but leaves to announce Prom King and Queen, leaving her purse with Imogen.

While she is away, Fiona's phone rings and Imogen sees that it is Cavalieri. Without thinking properly, she impersonates Fiona and schedules an appointment on prom night. Imogen arrives and pretends to be very drunk. Thinking she is Fiona, Cavalieri leaves outraged.

Imogen returns to prom and finds Fiona looking for her. She tells her that she went home to check on her dad.

While talking, Fiona gets a call from her mom. While she talks, Imogen leaves, afraid, and asks Bianca and Drew for advice. Before they can give her any, she sees Fiona looking at her angrily.

Degrassi12 Oct29 SS 0582

When she walks over to talk to her, Fiona tells her that Cavalieri called her mom and told her that she was drunk, and because of Fiona's past, her mother called rehab.

Imogen tries tell her that they can straighten things out, but Fiona tells her that he has already arrived at the airport, and leaves to enjoy prom as best she can without her. Imogen runs to the closet and cries where Eli and Clare run into her discussing something (see below).

Eli tries to comfort her and she realizes what she has to do. Imogen rushes to the airport to explain everything and show Cavalieri Fiona's artwork.

There, Cavalieri is surprised to see her and hear her story, and reluctantly decides to give Fiona a second (or first) chance.

The next morning, Imogen tells Mrs. Coyne that she re-scheduled the meeting, and apologizes. As she leaves, Fiona stops her and accepts her apology. They make up and go to graduation.

Unfortunately, Imogen breaks up with Fiona after her valedictorian speech. The two share a last kiss and a teary-eyed smile as Fiona returns.

Mentions

Season 13

Fiona is mentioned by Imogen in Summertime when she tells Adam about their break up and how they dated for half a year.

In About A Girl, Imogen mentions Fiona again when Adam tries to imitate Becky. Since her fight with Fiona was because she imitated her, Imogen keeps warning Adam not to imitate Becky.

In Young ForeverFiona posts a message on Adam's facerange memorial stating she was shocked about Adam's death and she wished she could have made it to the funeral. Eli also mentions her when Adam set up a New York party in the abandoned church for her.

During What It's Like, Drew told Becky about the time he lived with Fiona, and her past relationship with Imogen.

In Close to Me, Imogen mentions to Becky that she still misses Fiona and how in love they were together, but they barely talk anymore. Becky says how sad that is to her.

Season 9

As the gorgeous daughter of a wealthy foreign diplomat, Fiona has traveled the world, and her globetrotting, posh lifestyle has been reflected in her eclectic, high-end wardrobe. She is particularly fond of berets, high heels and statement jewelry. Her long, dark brown hair also seems to be a source of great pride for her, as it is almost always worn down in elegant curls, and accentuated by accessories such as scarves or headbands.

In Season 9, Fiona seemed to use fashion to distance herself from other students at Degrassi. Due to her disdain for her fellow peers, Fiona chose clothing to emphasize her own privilege. Never one for dressing down, Fiona experimented with clothes and accessories featuring contrasting patterns and textures. Though her choices were sometimes strange, they were always bold and memorable.

Annie-and-Jordan1

Season 10

Fiona's style was toned down slightly in season 10. As her friendship with Holly J. blossomed, she began emulating her new best friend's clothing choices. The softening of her attitude was reflected in her choice of less outlandish clothing, and the development of a more consistent, "girly" style. Nonetheless, she still maintained her love of designer labels.

Season 11

When uniforms were introduced at Degrassi, Fiona's keen sense of style enabled her to customize her uniform to suit her personality. She typically accessorized her blue polo shirt and khaki skirt with coloured or patterned tights, high heels, brooches, and blazers. It was also around this time that she began experimenting with bolder make-up, no doubt to add more colour to her dull school ensemble.

In Season 11, Fiona took an interest in life-drawing model Charlie. As the two pursued a relationship, Charlie's artistic influence began rubbing off on her younger girlfriend; Fiona's outfits outside of school began including more colourful, bohemian-inspired patterns and accessories, usually offset by an edgy, military style jacket.

Season 11.5

During the second half of season 11, Fiona came back to Degrassi to repeat her senior year, as she did not have enough credits to graduate with her class the year before. Though she missed her best friend Holly J. dearly, she was excited about the opportunity to reinvent herself. To coincide with this prospect, Fiona straightened her hair. Her hair would remain straight until winter break.

Season 12

Fiona returned to Degrassi in the new year with curled hair, as well as a new girlfriend in classmate Imogen. Imogen's "quirky-with-an-edge" style has inspired Fiona's most recent fashion choices. Fiona is now sporting slightly more tomboyish, butch-like clothing, including leather, biker-style and studded denim jackets, tight jeans, and slouchy beanies. She has also been seen wearing fewer colourful patterns, opting for more neutral colours such as black, and shades of grey. Nonetheless, Fiona manages to offset the edginess of her outfits with lovely, eye-catching rings, necklaces, and earrings.

Trivia

  • Fiona shares some similarities with Alex Nuñez, Ellie Nash, and future character Zoë Rivas.
    • Like Alex, Fiona was originally an unfriendly girl who later became a popular student involved in extracurricular activities. Both she and Alex had high ranking positions on the student council (Alex became Vice President and Fiona later was appointed as a Co-President). Both girls came out as lesbian later on in the show.
    • Like Ellie, Fiona was willing to pretend to date someone who was coming to terms with their sexuality. Ellie "dated" Marco and Fiona "dated" Riley. However, Ellie remained best friends with Marco while Fiona and Riley had a falling out due to his behavior towards Fiona.
    • Like Zoë, Fiona comes from a wealthy background and has a large interest in fashion. The two girls also served as Student Council President (Fiona was co-president with Marisol following Katie's departure), and came out as lesbian later on in the show.

However, she never shows any interest in Clare again, as seen when she says that she "barely knows" Clare and doesn't care about her birthday in season 12.

  • Fiona is one of five lesbians to be featured out of the closet on the show, the others being Alex Nuñez, Zoë Rivas, and Rasha Zuabi. Jack Jones was out at school, but not to her parents.
    • Only Alex and Fiona both seemed to come out as a lesbian without any problem (Jack was not out to her parents out of fear of how they'd react, Zoë was kicked out of her house by her mother, while Rasha faced hardships for her sexuality in Syria. She was estranged from her mother until the end of her first year at Degrassi).
  • Fiona is the first main character on Degrassi to enter her first relationship with another girl as an open lesbian.
