The friendship between Goldi Nahir and Rasha Zuabi began during the third season of Degrassi: Next Class.
Overview[]
When Rasha immigrated from Syria to Canada, the Nahir family took her in due to their mutual faith. Goldi and Rasha take different approaches to their personal definition of what it means to be Muslim and how they let their religion guide their lives. Goldi had unintentionally insulted Rasha when she explained what she thought it meant to be a good Muslim, causing a brief riff in their friendship. Rasha explained to Goldi that she does want to be her friend, and that she was never mad at her, and asked her to be a little more accepting of others faith.
Season 3[]
In #BreakTheInternet, Goldi and Rasha watch Zoë’s speech together, then afterwards Goldi introduces Rasha to Zoë.
In #WorstGiftEver, Goldi invites Zoë and Winston over to hang out with and get to know Rasha. They play charades and when Goldi refuses to high five Winston they all get into a discussion about Goldi’s beliefs and she mentions that the Quran often interprets being gay as a sin. Rasha doesn’t back Goldi up on this and Zoë and Winston leave. Goldi questions why Rasha didn’t back her up and it leads to an argument about being a good Muslim. The next morning, Goldi attempts to apologize by making Rasha breakfast, but Rasha still seems upset and leaves. She also stopped wearing her hijab and later Goldi tried to stop wearing hers, but wasn’t able to go through with it. She talks to Rasha afterwards and they make up and Rasha invites Goldi to hang out with her, Winston, and Zoë, joking that she wouldn’t have to touch Winston and they walk out with their arms around each other.
In #PicsOrItDidn’tHappen, Rasha discusses excitedly with Goldi that she tried out for the school play until Zoë intervenes about Hero actually being a boy role.
In #Unsubscribe, Rasha mentions to Goldi how Zoë got them High School Musical singalong tickets and Goldi gets tickets for herself, not knowing Rasha and Zoë were going on a date. Rasha and Zoë come up with a plan, having Zoë fake sick so Goldi will have to cover for her at a student council event. Goldi tells Rasha she has to cancel their plans with Zoë and says maybe they can have their own singalong at home, of course not knowing of Zoë and Rasha’s date plans.
In #ImSleep, Rasha officially comes out to Goldi and tells her that her and Zoë broke up and how Zoë was kicked out of her house. She calls Goldi out on her homophobia revealing that’s why she didn’t tell her sooner. Later when Zoë and Rasha make up, Goldi tells them that they should be together and she just wants Rasha to be happy. They hug.
Season 4[]
In #GetMoney, Rasha and Goldi are seen laughing and watching the video of Frankie smashing Jonah’s guitar together.
In #ILookLikeA, Goldi tells Rasha about how Zoë thinks her and Winston are flirting and Rasha agrees with her, bringing up a late night conversation between Goldi and Winston as an example. Goldi tries convincing Rasha her and Winston are just friends, which Rasha doesn’t seem to believe. Shortly after, Goldi receives a photo from Winston of his penis which shocks both Goldi and Rasha.
Later, Goldi and Rasha are talking about the situation with Winston when they walk into the student council office and see an apology note and cookies that Winston made. Winston comes in then and Rasha leaves.
In #RollUpToTheClubLike, Goldi and Rasha discuss why Goldi can’t hang out alone with Winston, and Rasha offers to come with them to the restaurant to taste-test desserts for prom. The three of them and Zoë go to the restaurant but Rasha and Zoë end up leaving them alone. Later after Goldi is assaulted, Rasha asks how she’s doing and talks with her about Winston.
In #KThxBye, Goldi crowns Rasha and Zoë prom queens. She and Rasha also help comfort Zoë at graduation and they both attend the after party at Miles’s house.
