The N was a programming block on Noggin (hence its name, which stands for Noggin), aimed at tweens and teens. It aired premieres of Degrassi: The Next Generation, as well as reruns of Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High (both under the name Degrassi: Old School).

Noggin, a cat who cameoed in Tears Dry On Their Own (1), was named after the channel.

It was first announced that Noggin had picked up the show in 2001, when the entire channel was aimed primarily at tweens. In mid-2002, Noggin shifted its schedule into two main blocks: a daytime block for preschoolers and a block for older viewers called The N. Most of Noggin's old shows started to air exclusively during the new "N" block. Degrassi started airing as part of The N on the block's premiere day (April 1, 2002), after short clips of the show aired on Noggin throughout March 2002.

From 2008 to 2009, The N had its own short-lived 24-hour channel, still operated entirely by Noggin LLC, but the channel was later closed and merged with Nickelodeon's block TEENick to form TeenNick. Degrassi was carried over to the new channel from 2009 through 2015, making it the only show from the Noggin block that still aired at the time.

History[]

Noggin premiered The N on April 1, 2002, and the block continued airing on the channel until December 31, 2007. Promotions advertised the block as "The N: The New Name for Nighttime on Noggin." It took several months for Noggin to choose the right name for the block; as reported by Kidscreen in 2002, they needed a name to "help distance and distinguish the tween programming from the preschool fare," but the legal department also required the block to maintain a relation to Noggin's main name.

The older-targeted shows that previously made up Noggin's original tween lineup—including A Walk in Your Shoes and Sponk!—aired during The N from 2002 onward. All of The N's original programming was greenlit, owned and produced by Noggin LLC, the same company which produced all of Noggin's original preschool series. The copyright bylines for Noggin's preschool and teen shows both read "Copyright Noggin LLC."
